Example control categories (PlanWise)

Here are some examples of pre-defined control categories that you can download and use in your projects.

In the control category window (in the middle of the tab Simulation Settings), right-click and select Add control category - Add control category from file...

Each example is accompanied by a brief description of the forest management objectives and, if applicable, recommendations for forest types suitable for the control category.

You can see what settings differ from the default settings by right-clicking in the window with control category-settings and selecting "Show non-default settings".

tog_minusBroadleaf forest with retention trees

Can be used to increase the area of mature broadleaf-rich forest over time.

Only natural regeneration, aspen and other broadleaved trees are not cut in cleanings/thinnings, and 40% of the birch stems must remain after cleanings/thinnings. Extended rotation times.

20 retention trees and 6 high stumps per hectare are left in final fellings.

tog_minusBroadleaf forest with natural regeneration

Production-oriented broadleaf forest management.

Soil scarification, natural regeneration. 100% of the stems after cleaning and thinning should be broadleaved if possible on the basis of the cleaning target (otherwise conifers are also saved). Rules for cleaning and thinning aim at low stem density to favour the dimensional development of individual trees.

tog_minusActive even-aged forestry

Soil scarification and planting with genetically improved spruce or pine planting material, depending on site characteristics.

Cleaning to low stem density to favour the dimensional development of individual trees. Thinning aims at low stem density and to lower risk of storm damage by not thinning too high stands. Cleaning and thinning are carried out with a target of 10% broadleaved trees. Regeneration felling allowed from minimum age according to the Forestry Act.

tog_minusExtended rotation times

Can be used to increase the area of old forest over time.

Only natural regeneration, seed trees are not felled. Aspen and other broadleaved trees are not cut in cleanings/thinnings, and 20% of birch stems must remain after clearings/thinnings. Extended rotation times.

20 retention trees and 6 high stumps per hectare are left in final fellings.

tog_minusLichen-favourable Management

Pine, low basal area.

For forests in reindeer-areas that has potential for lichen, namely pine-dominated forests, on dry or moist soil. Cleaning and thinning can be carried out earlier, and lead to a lower stocking than normal. The aim is to keep the basal area of the forest below 18 m2/ha throughout the rotation to promote the growth of ground lichen.
