A control category is a “container” for one or more control tables. StandWise has only one control category. In PlanWise and RegWise, several control categories can be created and linked to different Forest domains. Every control table includes a large number of settings. In normal cases, only a few of these have to be changed. As in version 2.0, you can select a simplified view, see Detailed or simplified view.

Default Control Category

A control category that is always present is the Default Control Category, which is used unless another category is selected.

Domain settings

A specific type of control category is named Domain Settings and is marked in green. There is always a Default Domain Settings added by the program. It includes only one control table, Nature Conservation. The Nature Conservation table can be used to divide a stand into two parts, one for wood production and one for nature conservation (see Nature conservation treatments) It is, for example, possible to specify the proportion of the stand to be set aside for conservation. Unlike regular control categories, it is not possible to link several Domain Settings categories to one and the same Forest Domain. This would mean that different proportions of the area would be assigned different management programs. This cannot be handled by the system today.

Default Domain Setting

The Default Domain Setting in the Nature Conservation table is used unless another choice is selected.

<%EXTOGGLE%>Create a new control category
1.Open the TPG-settings menu (in PlanWise), or Simulation Settings (in RegWise).
2.Right click in the window where the control category is created (see Figure 1) and select Add control category -> New control category.
3.Name the category with a descriptive name, e.g. “Pine stand management” if the category will include instructions for handling pine forest management.
4.Right click on the new category and select Add Control Tables…
5.Click on Add and add the tables where you want to create settings that deviate from the Default Control Category. The most common option is to add only Treatment Model and Treatment Program Generator, for example:

Add only the control tables where you will make changes from those in the Default Control Category! Information in control tables not included in a category can be imported from Default Control Category.

tog_minusCreate new “domain setting”

This is done in the same way as “Create new control category”, but the only control table that can be added is NatureConservation (which is done automatically in version 2.0 onwards).

<%EXTOGGLE%>Link control category to Forest Domain in PlanWise

Link a control category to a domain as follows:

1.Right click on the domain and select Edit control category connections... (Figure 1). KopplaKontrollkategeri_contexMeny

Figure 1. Link control category to a forest domain

2.Change the first column to the category you want to use (if you don’t want to use Default Control Category). For each “Generation 1” you can select one or more “Generation 2” (see step 5 below). You can add several rows with the Add-button.

flag_green        “Generation 1 and 2”

The concept “Forest generation” is used in Heureka when simulating clear felling forestry. Generation 1 means the current forest. Generation 2 means the following generation after clearcutting Generation 1. Generation 2 is thereafter assumed to be repeated to eternity. The regeneration settings for generation 2 (see Regeneration Settings in PlanWise) determine how the generation 1 is final felled (i.e. if seed trees are retained or not).

3.Change to No management (added by default for both Generation 1 and 2).

4.Click on OK, it should now look like this:

5.If you want to manage the current forest in one way and the following generations in another, you can select different control categories for Generation 1 and 2. Figure 4 shows an example for a Forest Domain called “Spruce forest”, with biofuel extraction from Generation 2. We assume that the content in Default Control Category hasn’t been changed, implying that biofuel will not be extracted. Generation 1 and 2 are here controlled by different control categories.

6.More than two generation can be linked to a Generation 1 by selecting “Select more”. The proportions of an area assigned one particular treatment and the area assigned another treatment can be changed in the optimisation model.

tog_minusLink control category to stands in RegWise

In RegWise, Forest Domains are linked to control categories in a similar manner as in PlanWise, but there are some differences. In RegWise, different forest generations are not given different control categories. If several control categories are linked to a Forest Domain, it is specified how the control categories are distributed among the stands in the Forest Domain (percentage units). Only one management program can be created for each stand. If several control categories are used in one Forest Domain, the stands are randomly assigned a control category. The randomization can be controlled through a fixed random number seed when a simulation is started. Read more here:
